On February 13th, Ripley’s Believe It or Not online comic strip marveled at Alexandre and Sonia Poussins’ three-year, 8,000-mile walk along the length of Africa. This amazing journey inspired their book, Africa Trek.
For many readers, the most incredible part of Alex and Sonia’s trek was their dependence on their African hosts. The couple found themselves welcomed each evening by distant neighbors as word began to spread of the trek. Though carrying just the barest of essentials, they never wanted for a meal or shelter for the night. In the end, they found they had discovered as much about the lives and stories of modern-day African, and about each other, as humankind’s ancient ancestors.

Ellen Sunden of West Lafayette, Indiana, just published her first novel, Domain of Illusion, with Inkwater Press. A fiction piece that uses symbolism to explore the health effects of tobacco use – Domain of Illusion wasn’t easy to get on the market. Ms. Sunden’s hometown newspaper, the Journal and Courier, wrote a recent article describing the challenges authors face getting published today and used Ms. Sunden’s success as the lead in the story.
With advice from Jeremy Solomon, Inkwater Press president as well as other experts in this field, the Journal and Courier article recommended that new writers join creative writing groups, write regularly, and understand that it takes patience to get published. You can read the complete article here.

Mid-March, Inkwater Press will take a satirical look at employee handbooks when we publish Welcome to the Company: (or What to Really Expect Working Here). An “Office Space” meets PowerPoint© guide, we think this book will appeal to the “about to be hired” and long-term employees.
Author Eileen McVety takes on work culture in her book with wit and honesty. She claims, for example, that her greatest professional achievement when working for someone else was ‘to secure an office with a computer monitor that faced away from the door, allowing her ample time to close the personal document she was working on whenever her boss walked in.”
For a short peek inside Welcome to the Company, read on:
We’re confident you’ll find your employment experience at The Gordon Wiggins Group to be a richly satisfying one. Not overly confident, mind you. Like we wouldn’t lay money on it…but hey, it’s a job, right? So quit your griping.
Watch our website for more, new information on this short and not-so-sweet book.
And, if you have a story to share about corporate hell, drop us a line. We’d enjoy publishing it here.

Glenn A. Terris of Scappoose, Oregon, took 40 years to write Genesis: Revisited. Published in November, the buzz about this science fiction novel cropped up almost instantaneously.
A long-time fan of Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick, Glenn was hospitalized for a year following an accident in his twenties. He wrote a first draft of Genesis:Revisited as he was recovering. Several local newspapers and a radio station in Glenn’s hometown in Vermont are covering this inspiring story.
Genesis:Revisited draws on classic science fiction themes such as extraterrestrial life and dramatic leaps forward in human evolution. On another level, Genesis:Revisited is a book about personal relationships: marriage, divorce, love and steamy sex show the human side of scientists, engineers and flight crews. As the story evolves, so do these characters. They make wiser decisions based on what’s right or wrong, not what’s easiest or fastest, a distinction Glenn draws from his own experience.
WCFR, a classic hits radio station in Windsor County, Vermont aired an interview with Glenn on December 10. The Camas-Washougal Post-Record will feature a story on Glenn and his wife Linda this month, as will the Blackriver Tribune in Springfield, Vermont. Two other Northwest newspapers and an online science fiction magazine are also talking to Glenn about possible stories.
So, what does this first-time author offer up as advice to new writers? “Do not give up. Hold on to the belief that you have something to offer that is worth whatever it takes. It took 40 years for this to come true for me. It will not take long for the second book.”
We think these words are particularly wise coming from Glenn.

Sesame Street Dad, by Roscoe Orman
In his new role as Chief Storyteller for AudibleKids, Inkwater Press author Roscoe Orman will educate children and parents about how listening to stories helps young readers develop reading skills. He will also narrate books and serve as a “roving ambassador” for AudibleKids’ services.
Regarding AudibleKids’ promotion of MP3 players as learning tools, Mr. Orman said, “When ‘Sesame Street’ began, television was a new and even controversial medium. But we showed how that technology, if used correctly, could become a powerful learning tool. I see the same kind of opportunity emerging today as parents and educators increasingly view iPods with skepticism. With AudibleKids, I believe we can help turn these players into magnificent storytellers, tools for learning, and a way to promote a lifelong love of stories and language.”
Mr. Orman is beloved by generations of families, who remember him as Gordon on “Sesame Street.” He has published two books through Inkwater Press: Sesame Street Dad: Evolution of an Actor, a career memoir, and Ricky & Mobo, a children’s book inspired by an episode in Mr. Orman’s childhood.
To order Sesame Street Dad and Ricky & Mobo, visit our online bookstore, InkwaterBooks.com.
