Frequently Asked Questions

What type of publisher are you?

Inkwater Press is an independent book publisher located in Portland, Ore. We publish books of all genres, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and picture books. We pride ourselves on offering customized publishing plans, personal attention, superior design, and a high-quality finished product. Our customized plans vary, from the traditional publishing model to author-subsidized publishing.

How is Inkwater different than other publishers?

Each project receives customized, individualized attention. Your book is never just a number to us; each author is important.

What type of publishing plan can I expect for my book?

Inkwater Press determines your publishing plan based on our review of your completed manuscript. We take the time to review all finished manuscript submissions. Submit my manuscript.

How long does it take for my manuscript to be reviewed? When will you get back to me?

For online submissions, we usually send an email within a couple of days confirming the receipt of your submission. As we carefully review all submissions, it can take a few weeks for us to fully review your work and get back to you.

Who designs my book?

We’ll work one-on-one with you to design a cover and interior specifically tailored to your book’s publication. We have a fantastic professional designer dedicated to creating the best cover for your book. Your book will be fully designed, inside and out, and will include a barcode and ISBN.

How will my book be printed?

Inkwater Press uses a number of different printers and printing methods. We specialize in print-on-demand books, which means books can be printed one at a time as ordered. This method reduces up-front publishing costs and is more environmentally friendly than bulk printing. For books requiring more advanced features, we work with a network of printers that can do pretty much anything.

How long does it take to get my book published?

This varies on the type of book and its publication process. Each book is unique, and we strive to give every project the personalized attention it needs. The process can be as little as four weeks, but typically ranges from eight to twelve weeks.

Where will my book be sold?

We work with some of the world’s largest book wholesalers; as a result, your book will be listed on top bookselling websites and will be available to bookstores for purchase. All titles Inkwater Press distributes are also available through Inkwater Books.

Does Inkwater Press offer marketing?

Yes! We have a variety of marketing services and tools available, including customized consultations. We can also produce marketing materials, such as postcards, posters, and business cards.

Do I receive royalties on book sales?

Yes! When customers buy your book, you will receive royalties from the sale.

I need lots of copies of my book to hand-sell at local events. Where do I get these books?

You can purchase author copies in bulk directly from Inkwater Press. The more copies you order, the higher the discount you receive.

Do you have a manuscript reading fee?

No! We do not charge to review manuscripts. Every manuscript submitted to us will be considered for publication.

Does submitting my manuscript for review imply any obligation to Inkwater Press?

Absolutely not. As the author, you hold all rights to your text. Simply submitting your manuscript does not obligate you to Inkwater Press in any way.
